Indonesia’s large-scale Food Estate programs aim to strengthen national food security but generate complex socio-economic and environmental consequences. While some projects increase agricultural output, their top-down, production-oriented approach often neglects community participation, land rights, and ecological sustainability. This has resulted in land conflicts, indigenous displacement, livelihood erosion, and weakened local food sovereignty. The expansion into fragile ecosystems, particularly peatlands, has triggered deforestation, biodiversity loss, and rising carbon emissions. Power imbalances and limited Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) further intensify social tensions. This study argues that the current model creates structural tensions between food security and food sovereignty. It recommends reorienting foodland governance toward participatory, community-based, and environmentally sustainable approaches to ensure equitable, resilient, and long-term national food security.
